Puppy Training

  1. The pre-introduction to the Gun is probably the most important part of puppy training. Always be very careful when introducing the gun to any dog. Always make sure the dog is fully distracted before shooting a gun around your dog. Always make sure you use a .22 or smaller caliber blank for the first few times. One method is to place a small bowl of tuna in an open area or in the puppy’s normal eating place. While the puppy is eating the tuna and thoroughly distracted step away (10-15 feet) from your puppy and fire up in the air one time and one time only. Do not pay any attention to the puppy’s reaction. If you react in any way the puppy will sense it and think something is wrong. Do this each day at the same time and place. After about three weeks while the puppy is playing somewhere else, try shooting once, and once only at the tuna location. The puppy should come running. If puppy comes running give him/her a treat or the tuna. This prepares the puppy for the Shot Gun.

Care should be taken during the introduction of the Shot Gun, one shot only. A Shot Gun should not be fired more than once during the early stages. Shooting a Shot Gun in rapid succession can easily create a “Gun-Shy” dog. It is far easier to introduce the Shot Gun to a dog slowly than to cure a “Gun-Shy” dog.

Puppy Training 2

  1. Take the puppy to a hallway and roll a ball down the hall and encourage him/her to retrieve it. As long as your puppy is in the hallway he or she can’t run off with the object, the puppy has only one way to go back to you. Don’t over do it three or four times each day is plenty. Even if the puppy won’t pick up the ball at first keep trying to encourage him/her to retrieve. When your puppy picks up the ball don’t insist on taking the object away from him/her at first let him/her hold the object and pet him/her and slowly take the object from the puppy.

  1. Use frozen quail with the feathers still on them to encourage the puppy to retrieve. Don’t let the quail become wet because the puppy will not like to retrieve wet birds at first, so alternate your birds. One of the reasons you want to use frozen birds is to discourage hard mouth. Once the puppy is bringing the quail back to you in the hallway, take him/her outside and encourage him/her to retrieve the quail. Should the puppy not bring back the quail don’t chase after him/her throw a hat or another object and most puppies will go for the new object and let go of the original.

  1. Take some hot dogs and cut them up into little pieces and call the puppy and when he/she comes to you give the puppy a piece. Then throw a piece on the ground in front of your puppy and say DEAD BIRD and let him/her eat the treat. Do this three or four times a day, and once the puppy starts looking for a treat each time you say Dead Bird, start scattering treats around the yard before you let the puppy outside. Once you let the puppy out say Dead Bird, and say LOOK and point at a treat. Pretty soon you can say Dead Bird and the puppy will search out the area for a treat. Once the puppy is doing that substitute the treat with a frozen bird. Each time the puppy finds a frozen bird give him a treat.
